Even as a child, I remember being impressed by Oscar Niemeyer’s architecture. I was only a 7 year-old boy when I first saw photos of the spectacular architecture in Brasilia. And its been a place of longing for me ever since. I have often been able to live out my fascination for architecture in my job as photographer, but a visit to Brasilia itself has been delayed by the Covid pandemic.

But not a trip to ‘little Brasilia’ in 2019, to Avilés in Asturias, where Niemeyer created one of the last projects realised during his lifetime, and one that demonstrated how good architecture, art and culture can positively change the mood of a city.
